Microdermabrasion
Hailey, Brody, Casey & Wray, M.D., P.C.
Microdermabrasion is a technique that
uses sand-like particles, specifically aluminum oxide crystals, to bombard
the skin. A simultaneous mechanical vacuum system removes the crystals along with the dead-cell layer of the skin. This
procedure is used to:
-
Improve splotchy pigmentation of face, neck, chest,
hands and arms
-
Improve resistant blackheads and whiteheads of
acne
-
Flatten certain types of Scars and Keloids
-
Minimize fine wrinkles
-
Increase the effectiveness of prescription medication/creams
-
Maintain effectiveness after more aggressive resurfacing
The technique may be especially helpful for sensitive
skin and darker skin types that may be resistant to other resurfacing methods.
The weekly procedure does not produce any “down time” from work, and takes
about 30 minutes for facial and non-facial areas. A series of at
least 6 weekly treatments is necessary to see results. After that
time, a maintenance treatment may be required on a monthly
or bimonthly basis. Your
dermatologic surgeon will advise you which course of treatment is best for your needs.
Because of the limited effectiveness of the procedure, alternatives such as
superficial peeling or spot dermabrasion may be preferable as alternatives or
supplement.
